Diabetes Mellitus

Understanding All About Diabetes Mellitus

The chronic condition, Diabetes Mellitus, can be diagnosed in children from a young age. Unfortunately, the severe condition is common worldwide and can dramatically affect the quality of a child’s life if not managed correctly.

Type 1 diabetes in children

Type 1 diabetes in children is the most invasive and disruptive form of the condition. The child can no longer produce insulin, which means insulin injections or an insulin pump is required. Once diagnosed, the daily routine of type 1 juvenile diabetics is complicated and exhausting.

It is essential that children with type 1 diabetes closely monitor their sugar levels and count carbohydrate intake. Advancement in research and medical equipment has improved the lives of diabetic children; however, it is still dangerous to a child’s health. Unfortunately, there is no cure for the illness.

Type 2 diabetes in children

Type 2 diabetes can be dangerous to a child’s life if it is managed incorrectly. A child with a chronic condition cannot process glucose efficiently. If blood sugar levels rise to a serious level, there can be permanent long-term consequences.

Unfortunately, the number of children diagnosed with type 2 diabetes have increased. Many suggest it is because modern-day diets lead to obesity and technology-based activities reducing exercise. An active lifestyle and a healthy diet go a long way to managing type 2 diabetes, with medication being a secondary management choice.

There are several national initiatives that Help4Kids wish to learn more about to help the children affected with diabetes.
