If you’re considering joining a charitable organisation, first ask yourself exactly what you want to get out of the experience. Do you want experience to help with your career? Are you mainly interested in helping people and making a difference? Are you trying to join a community of like-minded people and making new friends? Once you have decided what your main goals are, it will help you to determine what kind of organisation you want to join.

Research your options
When trying to pick the charity, take a good look at which causes they support, and try to figure out which one best suits your personality. It’s likely you already have an issue you are passionate about, so that would be a good place to start. You can ask yourself if you would rather work directly with people or behind the scenes. Also try to determine if you can use any skills you already have to help people through a charitable organisation, and if you would rather work on a global issue or a cause that more directly concerns your local area.
Matching your personality and aptitude to a certain charity is the best approach for being happy in the role. It’s not an ideal situation if you dislike the particular activity you are doing, and it will only discourage you from future volunteering work.
Conduct extensive research on the different causes you can help with and the charities that deal with those causes, and assess your personality and skillset to determine where you would best fit.
